George Jacob
From The Skies To Seafood Success

The seafood industry in Vietnam is a vibrant and rapidly growing sector, renowned for its diverse offerings and global reach. Central to this dynamic landscape is Mr. George Jacob, a visionary entrepreneur whose extraordinary journey from airline pilot to seafood magnate in Vietnam is truly inspiring. George’s story is a testament to the remarkable impact of passion and perseverance in the pursuit of success.

Can you share what inspired your remarkable transition from being an airline pilot to launching a seafood business in Vietnam?

It feels like destiny! My shift to the seafood business wasn’t a planned move; rather, circumstances led me here, unveiling new paths along the way. Timing and being in the right place certainly played a crucial role. I owe a lot to my wife, Tamina, and our wonderful children, Kiara and Kayaan. They’ve been instrumental in my success, with my wife holding down the fort in India while I ventured into this new territory. She is my pillar of strength.

Throughout your journey, who have been the most significant influences in your career, and how did they shape your decisions?

My father has always been my role model, offering me positive encouragement. I am also deeply grateful to Mr. K.C. Ninan, my friend’s father. He inspired me to start my own business instead of working for someone else and has mentored me ever since.

What were some of the initial hurdles you faced when starting your seafood business in Vietnam, and how did you overcome those challenges?

Launching a business in a new country is always a challenge, especially when faced with a different language and culture. Fortunately, I partnered with a remarkable woman named Mrs. Vuong Ngoc Bich. Together, we’ve built a successful business over nearly 25 years. I’d say we make a great team!

Your business has expanded into aquaculture. What inspired this move, and what potential do you see in that industry going forward?

Vietnam boasts rich, fertile land and a booming seafood industry. We recognized significant potential in aquaculture, which prompted our decision to invest in that area.

Can you elaborate on the journey of establishing your spices factory? What unique products do you bring to the market?

Absolutely! Given that Vietnam is the world’s largest producer of black pepper, we established a small factory near Saigon around 2010. We began by exporting whole cleaned pepper to the USA, Europe, and Asian markets. We’re now realizing Vietnam’s immense potential in the commodity space and are looking to add value to our products. Currently, we’re in discussions with a large European spices company for collaboration.

You’ve also ventured into tourism and medical tourism. How do these initiatives complement your primary focus on seafood and aquaculture?

We wanted to diversify beyond seafood and explore new opportunities. Vietnam has the potential to be one of Asia’s top tourist destinations, and there’s a growing interest from Indian travelers. With direct flights from Cochin to Ho Chi Minh City and the excellent hospital infrastructure in Kerala, we’re in the process of forming a joint venture with Rajagiri Hospital in Kochi for medical tourism.

What inspired you to create a new resto-bar in Saigon? Can you share more about its concept and location?

I truly believe in investing in people, not just businesses. I saw immense potential in Mr. Julio Gomez, a celebrity chef from Mexico who is now in Saigon. Together, we launched a restobar called Mamacita in Thao Dien, District 2, HCMC. I have exciting plans to expand further in this sector!

Reflecting on your 25 years in Vietnam, what are some of the most memorable experiences or milestones that have defined your career?

The most memorable moments for me have been the wonderful people I’ve met in Vietnam, who have become like family. To me, success in business is all about mutually beneficial partnerships, and I’ve always prioritized that. I’m genuinely optimistic about the future of business in Vietnam and eager for new opportunities!
