John Gardner is a distinguished hotelier with over 30 years of leadership experience across the Asia-Pacific region. Renowned for his expertise in managing 4- and 5-star hotels, he has overseen operations spanning general management, multi-property leadership, pre-opening and renovation projects, and long-term asset management. His career reflects a deep command of international brand standards, balanced with a pragmatic focus on performance and guest experience.

Beginning his career in New Zealand’s restaurant industry, John quickly transitioned into hotels, joining Accor in the early 1990s to manage upscale properties across the region. Later, with IHG, he spearheaded the opening of two five-star hotels in China, adding to his reputation for operational excellence. His career reached new heights in 2007 when he took on the role of General Manager at Caravelle Saigon—one of Vietnam’s most iconic hotels—where he later advanced to General Director of the joint venture owning company, guiding the landmark property through a period of transformation and recognition.

In 2021, John co-founded Optimum Hospitality, a consultancy and independent management company designed to deliver owner-focused expertise. Offering asset management, technical and pre-opening services, as well as “white-label” management solutions, the firm reflects his vision of combining global standards with tailored, hands-on support to maximise hotel performance and long-term value.
