Juan Miguel Losada
From Anticipation to Emotion

Tran Nguyen

From Dubai and Singapore to Mauritius, Barcelona and Vietnam, Juan Miguel Losada’s career unfolds across some of the world’s most defining hospitality destinations. In this conversation, the luxury hotelier behind Regent Phu Quoc reflects on leadership and the art of pre opening, on building culture before bricks, on experiential dining and sustainability, and on how true luxury today is shaped less by spectacle than by meaning, emotion and human connection.

Your career spans some of the world’s most iconic destinations from Dubai, Singapore to Mauritius, Barcelona, and Vietnam. How has this global journey shaped your definition of true luxury hospitality?

In my opinion, true luxury is no longer about excess or formality. It is about the art of anticipation: understanding guests on a deeper level, knowing what matters to them, and creating moments that feel effortless, personal, and emotionally resonant. Working in such diverse environments has taught me that luxury is defined by sincerity, authenticity, and respect for local culture. When we blend global standards with a true sense of place and heartfelt service, we create experiences that are both unforgettable and meaningful.

My global journey has also reinforced in me the importance of building teams who embrace curiosity and empathy. Great hospitality is ultimately delivered by people who listen, who adapt, and who take pride in elevating every detail. Across continents and cultures, this is what turns a beautiful resort into a truly luxurious experience.

You have led multiple ultra-luxury pre-opening projects, including Regent Phu Quoc and Fairmont La Hacienda. In your experience, what is the most critical factor in building the foundation for a successful luxury pre opening?

A pre-opening period is one of the most exhilarating moments in hospitality, because you are essentially creating a soul for something. You have plans, walls, renderings, checklists, timelines; but the real essence, the spirit of the place, must be built from zero.

The most critical factor is crafting the culture, creating the team. You can have the most beautiful architecture, the most remarkable design, the finest materials, but if the team hasn’t developed the same heartbeat, the same philosophy, the same obsession for details, the property will never truly come alive. We are not just recruiting talent, we are curating personalities, mindsets, and values that will define how guests feel the moment they walk through the door. I want a team that understands not only what we do, but why we do it. Because guests can sense authenticity instantly.

I also would say having calm confidence, and the ability to open not with noise, but with grace, precision, and heart. Once the culture is right, the operation, training, standards, and guest experience fall naturally into place.

When shaping the positioning strategy for an ultra-luxury resort, where do you begin with the people, the product, or the brand story and why?

I don’t begin with one. I begin with all three at the same time, because in true luxury hospitality, these elements don’t stand in line; they move together like a constellation.

A resort’s identity is never created in a sequence. It emerges in the synergy between the people who will breathe life into the experience, the product that sets the stage, and the brand story that gives everything meaning.

The team understands the brand story deeply enough to express it in their own authentic way. The product is designed to allow people to create the moments the story promises. The story reflects the local culture, the guest mindset, and the emotional intention of the resort. It’s a symphony, not a checklist.

Regent Phu Quoc became one of the world’s most celebrated openings, earning recognition from Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, and Forbes. What do you believe made this project stand out so exceptionally?

What made this project exceptional was that every decision was guided by a sense of purpose. We didn’t ask, “How do we build something impressive?” We asked, “How do we create something that feels unlike anything else in Vietnam—and yet is deeply connected to Vietnam?”

The product we created was bold and architecturally visionary, but it remained humble enough for nature to lead—this was very important to us. The team embraced the philosophy of Regent not as a manual, but as a muse. They understood they were not just learning service sequences, but learning how to create moments of quiet astonishment. They were artists of anticipation, choreographing experiences that felt personal, intuitive, and effortless.

I believe Regent Phu Quoc is celebrated not because it is perfect, but because it is deeply human. It dares to be emotional, poetic, and extraordinary in a world full of noise. And our guests feel that.

Guest expectations in the luxury segment continue to evolve rapidly. How do you craft experiences that feel deeply personal, meaningful, and emotionally resonant?

I think, in today’s world, luxury is no longer measured by what you can offer alone—it is measured by how deeply you can connect. Guests don’t seek perfection; they seek presence. They want to feel that every moment has been made for them.

I encourage my team to think like storytellers. Every interaction is a chance to add a meaningful moment to the guest’s life story. We also designed the resort environment to be a canvas for discovery—not loud, not forced; just layers of beauty, subtle surprises, and emotional touchpoints that guests uncover naturally as they move through the course of their stay. When a place feels curated yet effortless, guests relax and open themselves up to deeper experiences.

Most importantly, we craft high-quality experiences by nurturing a team culture where kindness, curiosity, and empathy are core values that we instill in ourselves and live by every day. Emotionally resonant luxury is not delivered by systems; it is delivered by human beings who genuinely care.

Sustainability has become a core pillar of global hospitality. How do you integrate responsible practices without diminishing the sense of luxury or comfort?

The biggest shift has been understanding that sustainability isn’t a programme; it is simply good hospitality done wisely. Guests don’t want to feel lectured, and they definitely don’t want to feel like comfort is being traded for conscience. Our approach is to make sustainability smart, seamless, and invisible.

Technology works quietly in the background, reducing energy and waste without compromising comfort. Local craftsmanship replaces mass-produced items, adding soul while reducing footprint. Natural materials and smart designs soften the environment, offering serenity while supporting longevity. The culinary experience honours the island, celebrating local produce, seasonal ingredients, artisans, and traditions.

You have collaborated with Michelin-star chefs and globally renowned wellness partners. How do gastronomy and wellness shape the soul and identity of the luxury resorts you lead?

Gastronomy and wellness shape the identity of a luxury resort because they define how guests feel and connect with a place. Collaborating with Michelin-star chefs brings a level of craft and cultural depth that tells an authentic story of the destination, adding a sense of awe and discovery to the experience.

Working with respected wellness partners allows us to create restorative journeys that genuinely rebalance our guests in ways that are distinctive to Regent Phu Quoc. Together, these elements form the character of the resort: a personal haven where the serene and the sensational coexist. They signal to our guests that we value creativity, wellbeing, and a true sense of place—the essentials of modern luxury.

Taste Studio has become one of Regent’s most distinctive experiential dining concepts. What makes it different from traditional resort dining venues in terms of creativity, engagement, and storytelling?

Regent has always believed that true luxury comes from experiences that surprise and engage. Taste Studio reflects that spirit - it brings together art, performance, music, design, and fashion to transform dining into something immersive and multi-sensory.

Each edition is guided by its destination. Through local ingredients, techniques, and concepts that reflect the culture, landscape, and seasonality, we ensure that every Taste Studio feels deeply connected to its locale and distinct in its personality. The dialogue between chef and artist turns this foundation into storytelling, creating a journey that feels personal and memorable.

Most resort dining follows a set script. Taste Studio thrives on the opposite - collaboration, spontaneity, and the joy of the unexpected. Guests don’t just watch; they become part of the creative process. This fusion leaves an imprint long after the night ends.

Taste Studio has collaborated with chefs, artists, and creative personalities. What is your philosophy when selecting partners or curating themes for these immersive sessions?

When selecting partners and curating themes for Taste Studio, I look for two things above all: authenticity and resonance. We seek collaborators who bring true mastery and whose vision aligns with the story we want to tell.

Every theme is inspired by the destination - its culture, landscape, and seasonality—ensuring each experience feels alive, meaningful, and emotionally engaging. Taste Studio is ultimately about dialogue: between disciplines, creativity, and our guests. Every choice we make is aimed at turning that dialogue into a journey that leaves a lasting impression.
