Warwick Olds - Unlocking Africa's Beauty

Discover the soul-stirring journey of Warwick Olds, founder of Mongoose Safaris, as he reflects on his lifelong connection to the African bush. Born in Zambia and raised across the continent, Warwick's cherished childhood memories on the Zambezi river have shaped his passion for safari experiences. He aims to share the transformative power of nature with others, inviting first-time visitors to unlock the incredible beauty and wisdom that Africa has to offer.

What inspired your journey towards a career intertwined with the wild and the establishment of Mongoose? What does the name "Mongoose" signify?

I was born in Zambia and raised in Africa, spending a lot of time in the wild. Sharing the magic of the African bush with people—especially those who have never experienced it before—is a huge privilege. Safaris make a significant contribution to wildlife conservation, both financially and through changing attitudes. For instance, about 90% of illegal rhino horn ends up in East Asia for supposed medicinal purposes that have no scientific backing. Increased exposure to the African wilderness can foster an appreciation for the need to conserve wildlife rather than destroy it, both in Africa and globally.

The name "Mongoose" is a personal choice. Everyone has a favorite animal, and mine is the mongoose! They are fascinating little mammals. Since species of mongoose are found in both Africa and Asia, and given Mongoose Safaris’ mission to connect these two regions, it seemed like a fitting choice.

Why has Mongoose chosen to focus its efforts on Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe? What makes these three countries uniquely special?

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is widely regarded as the ultimate safari destination; there’s nothing quite like it anywhere else in Africa or the world. Close by, the Victoria Falls—twice the height and four times the width of Niagara Falls—is a bewitching natural wonder that enhances many safari itineraries and is easily accessible.

Zambia and Zimbabwe feature some of the most game-rich and pristine wildlife parks in Africa, many of which are rarely visited and still feel undiscovered. With outstanding camps and excellent guides, these parks have managed to maintain a wonderful balance between wildlife and humanity. Unfortunately, in some parts of Africa, there are parks that have become so overrun with tourists that traffic jams occur—something that is undesirable for both the animals and the visitors.

What criteria does Mongoose use to select camps, lodges, and activity providers for its offerings?

We only recommend camps or lodges that we have personally visited and have experienced ourselves, ensuring they align with our values related to sustainability, conservation, and community support. We work with a variety of camps, ranging from luxurious to more rustic options. It’s about knowing the customer and what they might seek from a safari; some camps may be perfect for some guests while not being suitable for others.

In your opinion, what key factors contribute to a successful safari experience? How does Mongoose assist its clients in these areas?

Before embarking on a safari, many guests express a desire to see specific animals like lions, giraffes, or elephants. While they typically see these animals and more, when they return, the most memorable aspects often differ dramatically—such as the sounds of the African twilight, the countless stars in the night sky, or the quiet wisdom of an African sunrise.

Successful safaris deliver what people are looking for while also introducing them to unexpected delights and surprises that every great safari should provide. Everyone is unique, and we work with guests to create adventures that blend familiar expectations with the joys of discovery. There’s an old saying that nothing bites harder than the safari bug—after their first safari, many people ask, “When can we go back?” That’s likely the ultimate test of a successful safari experience!

Wildlife is a crucial aspect of Africa. How does Mongoose enable customers to observe and engage with them without causing any adverse effects?

The camps we work with are designed and built to minimize environmental impact. Generally, constructions can be dismantled with little trace left behind, and solar power is widely utilized. Game viewing activities are led by highly qualified guides who allow guests to observe animals as closely as possible without disrupting their natural behaviors. Guests receive thorough briefings on the dos and don'ts, which consist of easy-to-follow yet vital guidelines. We let nature take its course while we remain mere onlookers.

Do your offerings encompass wildlife conservation initiatives?

Absolutely. All our partners actively support various conservation efforts, and we are privileged to work alongside an extremely effective anti-poaching organization—VFAPU. The work VFAPU has done to protect wildlife around Victoria Falls and along the Zambezi River is outstanding and continues to be impactful. For travelers interested in learning more about conservation initiatives, we can arrange talks, activities, and experiences to explore these efforts firsthand.

What guidance do you typically offer to first-time safari-goers in Africa?

Plan early—ideally at least six months in advance—and take the time to discuss and consider options that feel right for you. Ensure that your trip includes comprehensive care from the moment you arrive at the airport until you leave. A safari is often a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so it’s essential to do it well.

How do you maintain your connection to Africa while living in Vietnam?

I travel to Africa several times a year, with each trip lasting approximately four weeks. When I’m not in Africa, I maintain weekly communication with my colleagues there.

What different aspects do you notice younger customers seeking in their safari experiences? How does Mongoose address these evolving needs?

We are observing many people, especially from the younger generation, shifting away from showy travel to a focus on self-fulfillment. It’s less about showcasing experiences on social media and more about personal growth through travel. The trend of conspicuous consumption in travel is fading; now, travel is becoming more about reflection and self-discovery.

In light of this shift, it’s essential for us to tailor each trip uniquely based on the needs and desires of the traveler(s). Every itinerary is crafted through discussions with customers, ensuring it is personalized just for them.

What new travel trends do you anticipate for safaris in the upcoming years?

In Vietnam, I believe we’ll see an increase in honeymooners considering safaris, as it can be a profoundly romantic experience, with many camps offering special arrangements for newlyweds.

Additionally, there is a broader trend of e-fatigue, where people feel exhausted by 24/7 connectivity. There’s a rising desire for escapes that allow individuals to shift from “always on” to “mostly off,” taking time away from clutter and noise to rejuvenate. There’s no better setting for this than in a remote African camp, where you might be miles away from the nearest person.
