World’s Best Bourbon 2026

In an industry where the highest honors often go to impossibly rare and prohibitively expensive bottles, the 2026 World Whiskies Awards delivered a welcome surprise. Claiming the coveted title of World’s Best Bourbon was an accessible $40 release from Kentucky’s New Riff Distilling.

As the World Whiskies Awards concluded their 2026 cycle, the spirits world found itself with a new point of focus. Rather than rewarding an elusive collector’s item or a trophy bottle defined by scarcity, the judges crowned New Riff Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon, a widely available expression sold across the United States for around $40. It was more than a win. It felt like a subtle redefinition of what excellence in bourbon can mean today.

Founded in 2014 in Newport, Kentucky, New Riff Distillery has built its identity on a measured balance of tradition and precision. Its award-winning bourbon adheres strictly to Bottled-in-Bond standards, a designation rooted in 19th-century American whiskey law. That means the spirit must be produced in a single distillation season, at one distillery, aged for a minimum of four years, and bottled at exactly 100 proof. In New Riff’s case, it is also non-chill filtered, preserving greater texture, body, and aromatic depth.

This triumph is grounded in meticulous and transparent craftsmanship. New Riff uses a high-rye mash bill composed of 65% corn, 30% rye, and 5% malted barley. Aged in new charred American oak barrels, the bourbon develops a profile that is both structured and expressive.

In the glass, it offers a tasting experience of notable complexity. The nose opens with bright notes of lemon zest and rich butterscotch. On the palate, layers of cinnamon, caramel, and vanilla cookie unfold alongside fresh fig and sweet pastry. As the whiskey evolves, more savoury nuances emerge, including pumpernickel rye, dried leather, and a faint saline edge that lends tension to the sweeter notes. The finish is warm, lingering, and gently spiced, marked by caramel, lemon peel, crumbly biscuit, and roasted coffee.

What makes this recognition especially striking is its accessibility. Unlike many award-winning whiskies that vanish from shelves or soar in value on the secondary market, this bottle remains available in all 50 U.S. states for approximately $40. It is a rare example of top-tier bourbon that remains firmly within reach.

The World Whiskies Awards follow a rigorous two-stage judging process, with American whiskey evaluated entirely within the United States. Initial rounds took place in Bardstown, Kentucky, and Washington, D.C., while the final American winners were announced in Louisville on February 12, 2026. By law, bourbon is judged domestically, underscoring the cultural and geographic specificity of the category.

In many ways, New Riff’s success reflects where bourbon is heading. Prestige is no longer defined solely by age statements, scarcity, or collector appeal, but by the quality of the liquid itself. That a widely available $40 bottle now holds this title makes the statement all the more persuasive.
