Elijah Craig
A Bolder Turn in Bourbon

Van Ho

Elijah Craig’s new 15-Year-Old Single Barrel feels less like a dramatic reinvention and more like a smart, confident next step. Bottled at 108 proof, it brings extra depth and intensity to the brand’s premium bourbon lineup, while still keeping the experience polished and inviting for drinkers who want something richer without going to extremes.

As the premium bourbon world continues to evolve, Elijah Craig is clearly responding to a growing appetite for bottles that offer both age and character. This new annual U.S. release reflects that shift. Rather than simply pushing proof higher for impact, the brand seems focused on finding a balance between strength, complexity, and drinkability.

On paper, the bottle is already compelling. It is a 15-year-old single-barrel bourbon, bottled at 54% ABV, with a suggested retail price of US$150. That places it in an interesting middle ground within the Elijah Craig range. It is more powerful than the 18-Year-Old expression, which comes in at 90 proof, but more approachable than the brand’s barrel-proof releases, which can feel intense even for experienced whiskey drinkers. In that sense, this expression is built to offer presence without becoming overwhelming.

Its roots, however, remain firmly traditional. Produced by Heaven Hill, the bourbon uses a mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley, the same base recipe found across several familiar labels in the portfolio. What sets this release apart is the combination of long aging and careful barrel selection. After 15 years in new charred oak, each barrel is chosen and bottled on its own, allowing the whiskey to retain a sense of individuality while still reflecting the consistency of the house style.

The choice of 108 proof also feels intentional. According to master distiller Conor O’Driscoll, Elijah Craig tested a range of proof levels before arriving at what he considered the sweet spot. The goal was to bring out more depth, texture, and flavor while keeping the bourbon smooth enough to enjoy over the course of an evening. Even the 54% ABV has meaning, referencing bourbon’s official recognition by the U.S. Congress in 1964.

The extended 15-year maturation delivers a profound oak influence, yielding a rich, full-bodied profile. The elevated proof amplifies the flavor intensity, yet the spirit remains remarkably refined. It is positioned as an all-evening sipping bourbon, meticulously designed to deliver power without ever overwhelming the palate. For seasoned collectors and premium spirits buyers alike, it represents a compelling value proposition that seamlessly marries age, strength, and brand prestige.

Within the Elijah Craig portfolio, this 15-year release fills a space that feels increasingly relevant. It sits comfortably between maturity and intensity, tradition and modern taste. More than just another addition, it suggests a clear direction for the brand: classic bourbon, made bolder for today’s drinker.
