Sushi Rei

Sushi Rei is tucked away in an unassuming side street in District 1 at the end of an alley, the place has only been open for a year but is already regarded as one of the best sushi places in the city.

Japanese culture is deeply rooted in respect, humility and harmony with nature and Sushi Rei seems to embody this in all aspects. The service here is impeccable and the slightest look can have someone appear asking in a hushed tone if there’s something they can help you with. Rei has only eight seats and one private room so guests can enjoy an authentic, intimate experience offset by soothing jazz piano and modern contemporary furnishings to enhance the feeling of peace. The design was created by famous Japanese architect Joe Chikamori using imported materials from Japan.

The only way to order is “omakase”, which roughly translates to “chef‘s choice” and allows the chef’s creativity and skills to shine through. Fresh fish is shipped directly from the Tsukiji Fish Market, the wholesale market in Tokyo. Favourites are the sashimi with freshly house-made wasabi, the nigiri sushi, which includes two kinds of eel: one with sea saltand one brushed with a sweet glaze. The Pacific Saury, a staple in the Japanese diet and sea urchin topped with salmon roe. For dessert try the sweet egg sushi or Japanese green tea ice-cream.
